In this issue:
Pastor Rob here. Though I have shared this with some, I'm not sure how many are aware that my mom, Deb, is terminally ill. It has been a fairly quick progression, basically since the start of the year, and she's home on hospice now. Her mom and dad passed in 2024 and 2025 respectively, so it has been a rough season for my folks for a while now. After my grandparents passed, I certainly did not expect my mom to go so soon after. I write this in one of my few moments I've allowed myself to weep about everything; like my mom, I've always been the type to make sure everyone else is ok before I let myself have time to process or grieve. As bitter as this time is, there is a special sweetness amidst the sadness that makes these moments bearable. What might that sweetness be? Well, my mom has talked non-stop about how excited she is to see Jesus; to be in his presence, and to leave her pain behind. My grandma and grandpa (we called him "Pauzie") approached their passing with the same hope and joy in Christ, and heaven today is a sweeter hope for me with them there.
In the opening of Paul's letter to the Philippians, he writes this about the eventual end of his earthly life (Philippians 1:18b-27 ESV):
"Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel..."
Lord, as we face seasons of grief and loss, remind us that this life is a difficult but brief thing when compared to eternity. May we walk diligently in you and live worthy of the Gospel while you have us here, looking forward with hope as Paul did on the moment when we will be with you, and with those saints we love who have gone before us.
We love you, Lord. Amen.
