While digging into the history of some Christmas carols this week, I ran onto a story I had never heard before, and thought it would be fitting to share ahead of the Christmas holiday about the carol, "Silent Night".
Written and composed as "Stille Nacht Heilige Nacht" in 1816 in Austria, the song had spread all over and been translated into many languages by the time The Great War broke out in 1914. After months of bitter fighting and casualties on all sides, the Christmas season brought about something unexpected on the Western Front: singing from the trenches! Hearing "Stille Nacht" from the German trenches, British soldiers began to sing along in English. Soon soldiers from France, England and Germany crossed into no man's land and began to talk with one another, share meals, honor their dead and sing carols together. What an unexpected joy it must have been to celebrate the Prince of Peace with enemies in a warzone! Though the war would continue through 1918, those peaceful Christmas meetings in the middle of war would remain in history books as The Christmas Truce of 1914.
